ลักษณะทางพฤกษศาสตร์

ไม้ล้มลุกฤดูเดียว สูง 40-100 ซม. ใบเดี่ยวเรียงสลับ รูปไข่ถึงรูปไข่แกมโล่ เนื้อใบหนาก้านใบยาว ขอบใบจักฟันเลื่อยและมักจะเป็นคลื่น โคนใบมักยื่นเป็นติ่ง ใบบริเวณโคนต้นมีขนาดเล็กกว่าตอนปลายยอดซึ่งเป็นรูปขอบขนาน ก้านใบสั้นไม่มีติ่ง ดอกช่อกระจะออกที่ซอกใบและปลายยอดยาว 30-40 ซม. ดอกย่อยสีขาวหรือเหลือง พบน้อยที่มีสีแดง กลีบดอก 4 กลีบ เกสรตัวผู้ 6 อัน ยาว 4 อัน สั้น 2 อัน ผลเป็นฝัก ยาว 3-9 ซม. ปลายเป็นจะงอย เมล็ดกลมสีน้ำตาลถึงดำ เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 2-3 มม.
